Already unstable when we came here, digging the necessary trenches to bring water up to the house finished off these stone steps up on the 1837 barn, and they tumbled down. Unfortunately the top room houses the electricity meter and although the meter reading man gamely scrambled up them and made his way across the rotten floorboards for a whole year, we decided last April to rebuild them. We are told that this type of stone stairway on the exterior of barns is unique to this area, there certainly are several examples on the surrounding farms.
Hefin is running two dry stone walling weekends for us this year (see the training page for details and booking), and if you live or work in rural Conwy you may be able to receive 75% funding towards the cost – please contact us for details, more on which will be posted soon.
