Aimed at those new to lime or anyone who wants to increase their understanding, this one day course teaches the basic theory and practical uses of building limes.
Limes has been used for thousands of years and today we are a seeing resurgence in their use because of the benefits that the material brings to the performance and appearance of buildings both traditional and modern.
We will take a comprehensive look at what lime is, the different types of lime available and their various uses and methods of application. We will focus on the use of lime in North Wales, showing examples of how it was used in the past and demonstrating how it can be used today. We will discuss appropriate aggregate selection and demonstrate different ways to mix plasters and mortars.
The morning session starts with a lecture that covers the theory and shows examples of both good and bad practice. We talk about the traditional craft, but also about new innovative products.
We follow with a hands-on practical afternoon, where you will be able to try a range of lime plasters that include the traditional sand and lime mixes, as well as insulation plasters such as hemp and cork. You will be given the opportunity to have a go at pointing, plastering, lime-washing and shelter-coating.
The day is designed to teach you the theory, give you the opportunity to use a broad range of materials, and to give you the knowledge and confidence to work with lime on your own buildings. At the end of the day you will have the opportunity to discuss your own project, so please bring pictures along if you have anything in particular that you would like to discuss.
